The trash compactor worked great for the first week. It complements our kitchen decor and helps us reduce our trash footprint. It was easy to use. We're hoping after the nylon bolts are replaced that we will reap the benefit of a fine kitchen appliance for years to come.

First trash compactor I've ever owned... and so far I'm impressed. We live out in the middle of nowhere, and have to drive our trash 25-minutes each way to take it to a transfer station. Less trips is better, especially at $4 per gallon gas.
The system works well... and I was concerned about the bags to use. Tried the original OEM bags, and couldn't stand how expensive they were. Ended up using cheap bags (and punching a hole for the mounting pins) to decrease the cost..
The unit is easy to run (too easy sometimes; we hit the "run" thing with our feet accidentally pretty frequently... so we leave it off until we want to run it. No big deal. When it's running, it's a little on the loud side, but I would have expected as much.
What I wish was included was some sort of charcoal/filter system that would help to decrease the "trash" small after a few days. The unit does as good a job at compaction (so much so that we can go about a week with the same bag), but by day 4-5 it's smelly.
After only 1 month of working with this thing, we love it.

Installed this compactor in September and it lasted 6 weeks before the ram crashed, got stuck, and damaged the bin. Finally managed to get the ram to go back up so the repair man could access the unit. It was determined that the rod on one side of the unit had stripped and the ram came down crooked. So 4 months later I got a new unit and used it for 2 weeks before the ram would not go down. Supposedly this unit can be repaired, but it is the same issue with the rod being stripped on one side. At least it did not damage the bin this time. I don't have high hopes that the repair will be the last one.

Does not compact. GE sent 2 service people, 1st one said "this model does not compact!"" so GE sent a 2nd who said maybe after using for a while it will have less tension on the spring on bottom and will compact" It is useless. Definitely, not GE quality.

While it took many months to finally receive the trash compactor, we are happy with the UCG1520NSS. We were accustomed to having a handle to open the trash compactor, but we have adjusted to exclusively using the foot pedal to open the unit. The ability to "stay in the compacted" position is no longer present, but it isn't absolutely necessary. The motor has a much higher pitch than the old unit, but it appears to work. Just sounds like a little motor compared to the old one. We are happy with the compactor and would reccomend this model.

Never worked once installed. Compactor did not open by itself. One had to pull it out and then push it back in. Then the first time I tried to compact anything it got stuck and broke. Food was in it and couldn't get service in for three weeks and home smelled terribly.

This is my second one. Installed one in previous home. This one was a piece of cake to level and position within the cabinet. It's simple to operate with a flip of your foot. One thing I don't like compared to older model is that the handle has been removed. Even though it opens by pressing the lever with your foot one dings touching the top edge to fully extend it. You can see the fingerprints gathering on the top ends even before using.

We haven't even had this 3 weeks yet, but so far so good. It seems to compact trash well, looks good (except I wish the "stainless" finish was a bit more fingerprint forgiving), and functions as we need it to. My only concern at this point is the longterm quality of the foot plate. It seems like it may be somewhat flimsy, so I worry that over time it may not last well from using it - up to open it and down to initiate compacting. Hopefully it won't be an issue.

The compactor is easy to use. Unfortunately, the spring which causes the door to open is very weak, so it doesn't open very far when using the foot pedal to open - this is the only way to open it. You have to push the foot pedal very hard to get the door to pop open enough for you to drop your trash inside without touching the door.

Unlike my KitchenAid compactor, this GE compactor doesn't have a drawer pull handle. You can only open it with the foot release. I like the convience a a foot opening door, but perhaps a third of the times I opened my previous 3 KitchenAid compactors was with my hand. Otherwise, it does the job a compactor should do.

It worked well until it didn't. Was first installed and used last month with a new kitchen remodel. It seems as if it died mid compact because it won't open enough to fix. Hopefully the warranty will take care of it.

Clean look. Nothing special for the cost. If my kitchen cabinets weren't so expensive to restructure I would have done without a trash compactor. The previous one was 7 years old and was not repairable according to Sears. I paid $999 for a replacement and Sears warranty only paid $481 I felt ripped off

Compactor was delivered on 9/28/21. On 10/08 it stopped working. The motor runs if I hold the toe kick up but the ram doesn't move. I reported it to the place I bought (Appliance Connection) it on 10/10 and have heard back from them several times. As of 10/23 I am still waiting for a service person.
