We are a plumbing contractor and we have sold about 25 of the 50 gallon Flex heaters. So far we have had 4 defective units which is really too many. Tech support hasn't really helped much because they don't know much other than just replacing the control panels. We are no longer selling this unit and returned the one we keep in stock.

Quality Water Heater with Useful Features

I have no reason to not give 5 stars. I've had it in use for several years. It was easy to install, easy to setup and has performed as I have hoped. We often use the vacation fair to save on heating water while no one is around. I have set up a daily schedule for M-F and a separate one for weekends to match our own schedules. I flex up on capacity when we have guests. We've never had a capacity issue, yet. I do this all via the app. The app had a bit of a learning curve but nothing insurmountable. It appears to always hold the set temperature, as observed using a thermal sensor.

A Good Replacement Unit With Room for Improvement

I'd have preferred a heat pump unit to save on electricity, but that would have been very difficult and expensive, given my physical layout. This unit is actually smaller than the water heater it replaced, and we have not run out of hot water at any time. It works silently and effectively. We haven't even had to engage its "excess capacity" feature that uses a mixing valve and over-temperature to emulate the performance of a larger storage tank. Our installer did a neat and professional job, although anyone handy with tools should be able to tackle it as a DIY project. I would like to see a software update that would allow you to turn the unit on and off according to a schedule, similar to scheduling a smart thermostat. This would make it easy to save power during times when no one is home or there is a reduced need for hot water.

Buyer beware!

I bought this Water Heater and it was delivered from GE at the beginning of October 2024. After less than 6 months the unit shut down. After resting the unit it sent a failure notification to my phone app. The F codes it was showing said I needed to contact Service Department for repairs. I called the next morning and then received an email afterwards stating that they would send the parts to my house, but living in Metro Denver, there are no Service Techs available in the area. They stated that I would need to find my own Servicer and that they would reimburse me up to $250 afterwards. This was on March 27th and to this day, April 25th, I have yet to receive any parts. IF YOU WANT TO THROW YOUR MONEY AWAY, YOU CAN SEND IT TO ME AND GET AS MUCH OUT OF IT!

Warning: DONT BUY GE PRODUCTS The product failed after 3 years and parts and service cannot be accessed on weekends. The plumber who came out took potty on me saying they have seen it difficult to get parts, and warranty assistance takes at least two weeks. This is causing severe inconvenience and costing $$$. Even purchased through Costco I cannot access help.

I love this unit but it failed after 3 years with water streaming out of the control box. I called GE and they were literally worthless in offering support. Costco support was excellent as usual but GE was terrible and basically couldn't do a thing for me. The unit had a 10 year warranty yet after three years it was up to me to pay for a plumber to come diagnose the failure and GE offered to repair the damaged parts. So I pay the hourly rate of a plumber $150/hr to diagnose the problem. It would be cheaper to replace the failed unit than to waste time diagnosing the problem (a hole in the side of the unit where water is gushing out the unit) .... the customer service person was not helpful and couldn't find any qualified service agent to help assist me.

Excellent Start for a New Water Heater

My local contractor got me looking at this heater. I like that it had added features and especially that it had a much better warranty (10 years) than the rest of the same old brands everyone else sells in my area. I very much like the idea of being able to ramp up the temperature and have added capacity via the mixing valve, which should be great when we have company staying over. I also like that there is an end of life notification for the anode - great idea. If you're someone frequently away from home, then you can set it on vacation mode and manually access it via an app to ramp it up or down as needed. It looks nicer than most water heaters I've seen and with the added features seemed a no-brainer.

We replaced our 10 year old 50 gallon water heater after it stopped being able to keep up with out family of 5. We were looking to replace it with a higher capacity, but electric water heaters are no longer available at more than a 55 gallon capacity. So far we have had a great experience with our new GE water heater. We have it set at the middle temperature setting and have not run out of hot water, even during our peak hot water usage times! Time will tell how the unit will hold up, but so far we are thrilled to have found this!

So far, so good been installed for a month now. Family of 4 and on high demand nights it works as if it is an 80 Gallon tank. So far we haven't had any issues. Easy to install and set up. Wifi was a little tricky at first, but figured out. Love that you can set schedules for how you want it to perform on certain days and then it defaults back for energy efficiency. Power bill came in little lower also. Very pleased with this purchase.
